Understanding behavioural problems in children-

Background-

 Some children have challenging behaviours that are outside the norm for their age, thus it is essential to understand behavioural problems in children. These could be conduct disorder, ADHD, disruptive disorders, etc

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

occurs under the age of 12. Behaviours include-

  • Easily angered, annoyed
  • Frequent tantrums and arguments
  • Refuses to obey rules
  • Poor threshold
  • Low self-esteem
  • Blames others for any misdeeds.

Conduct Disorder

Some of the typical behaviours may include:

  • Frequent refusal to obey parents
  • Tendency to use drugs, cigarettes and alcohol
  • Lack of empathy
  • Being aggressive
  • bullying and physical or sexual abuse
  • physical fights
  • Frequent lying
  • Criminal behaviour
  • A tendency to run away from home
  • Suicidal tendencies

Preventive measures-

  •  Breastfeeding
  • avoiding second-hand smoke exposure
  • intensive parenting

Treatment

Treatment is usually multifactorial. It is related to the factors contributing to it and type of disorder. Treatment options are as follows-

  • Parental education – about behavioural disorders and teaching parents how to communicate with their children.
  • Family therapy
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Social training – the child is taught important social skills
  • Anger management – the child is taught coping skills designed to defuse their aggressive behaviour. Relaxation techniques and stress management skills.
  • Encouragement
  • Medication

Early Identification

Early detection helps in early intervention of the problem.

It helps improve the quality of life

Reduces burden of families and society

Prevents development of mental disorders
