World oral health day: Importance of dental hygiene

The impact of Dental hygiene-

Dental hygiene is an important aspect of our daily lives. Non compliance with dental hygiene, acts as a major barrier to prevent dental issues. Good oral hygiene takes only minimal minutes per day and if practiced regularly can save a lot of treatment costs.

A lot of individuals have the tendency to avoid recurring treatment. It is quite common that people seek treatments only for emergencies. Evidences suggest a direct association between dental anxiety and delaying treatments. It is however important that we understand, preventive and restorative treatment can always help limit aggressive treatments.

Current oral hygiene measures-

Most treatments can actually be prevented by practicing oral hygiene.

  1. Toothbrushes
  2. Floss
  3. Interdental cleaners
  4. Mouth rinsers
  5. Dentifricers

Why is oral health important?

Health starts from the mouth and is a starting point for the general health and well-being of our body. oral diseases—tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancers are exceedingly common. These are affecting an estimated 3·5 billion people across the world. Oral health is related to development of systemic complications. These may include several factors such as insulin resistance, or more complex multi-organ systemic complications involving the cardiovascular system or even neurodegenerative pathology. Therefore, improving oral health, improves systemic health overall. It helps to prevent pathologies and improves quality of life.

Tips to maintain oral hygiene

  1. Brushing teeth twice daily
  2. Change your brush once in 3 months
  3. It is advisable to use a soft brissled toothbrush
  4. Use an appropriate mouthwash which your dentist recommends.
  5. Maintain a healthy diet
  6. Schedule a regular dental checkup.

Brushing-

it is mandatory to brush all teeth surfaces. Include the enamels and gum line. Also brush the overline tongue surface to get rid of bad odour and bacteria. Use a fluoride toothpaste.

Flossing-

food particles sometimes may get lodged in between the teeth surfaces. These are difficult to get rid of with a toothbrush. In such scenarios, flossing helps remove these particles.

Diet-

eat a balanced diet. Indulge in wholesome edibles. Avoid consumption of tobacco, avoid excess smoking or alcohol. Excess tobacco consumption is the leading cause for oral cancer. Stay well hydrated and ensure you gulp plenty amounts of fluids. Avoid excess consumption of sugary foods. Minimise your beverage intake.Also Ensure your diet has good amounts of calcium, iron and protein.

Eating habits- What to eat and what to avoid-

To achieve a good oral health-

Calcium – milk, cheese, yoghurt, almonds

Phosphorus- eggs, nuts, legumes

What to avoid-

Sugars, carbonated drinks, alcohol.

When to see a doctor?

  1. Toothache
  2. Swollen gums
  3. Bleeding
  4. Loose teeth
  5. Preventative care
  6. Broken tooth
  7. Teeth sensitivity
  8. Jaw pain
  9. Bruxism

The final word-

Value and take care of your oral health and take the right decisions to protect it. A healthy mouth is important for our overall well being. It is important that we are aware about the global burden of the impact of poor oral hygiene and we thus take measures to resolve it.
