Introduction-

Cupping therapy is one of the traditional therapies of releasing the toxins from body. It is also known as hijama cupping. It involves placement of cups on the skin which causes suction over the body part,thus causing increased blood flow and thereby removing toxins from the body.

More about cupping-

Cupping is a simple application to stimulate muscles. It is particularly helpful in the treatment of aches and pains. Suction and scarification are the two techniques of wet cupping. Interventions could enhance or suppress body hormones, or it might stimulate or modulate immunity, or it may get rid of harmful substances from the body, and eventually it might ease the pain.

Different Types Of Cupping-

Cupping therapy is an ancient method of treatment.Moreover It has been used in the treatment of a variety of conditions. There are many types of cupping, however dry and wet cupping are the two main types. Dry cupping pulls the skin into the cup without scarifications, whereas in wet cupping the skin is lacerated and thus blood is drawn into the cup.

  • Needle

Conditions in which cupping is used-

Cupping therapy is indicated for both healthy patients as well as for treating any ailments. Conditions that benefit from cupping therapy include a headache, low back pain, and also knee pain. Systemic illnesses include hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, mental disorders, heart disease, hypertension, and also infections. Additionally  It can be used to treat skin diseases, respiratory, musculoskeletal, digestive, reproductive, and allergic conditions,etc

Avoid cupping when-

  • Excessive dry or cracked skin
  • Open wound or ulcer
  • Fractured bone
  • Dislocated joint
  • Bleeding disorder
  • Excessive swelling

Benefits-

  1. Cupping helps to reduce pain
  2. Reduces inflammation.
  3. Improves blood flow.
  4. Used for relaxation and thus promotes well being 
  5. Facilitates healing process 

Effects-

  1. Skin: Improved metabolism , improved healing and also improved skin resistance.
  2. Muscles and joints: Stimulates blood flow
  3. Digestive system: Increased peristalsis
  4. Nervous System: Stimulates sensory nerves of skin and therefore improves ANS

Side Effects-

Cupping is a low-risk therapy. However, Dizziness, nausea, sweating may be experienced.

Also, After treatment, the skin becomes marked in a circular pattern.

Other side effects can be-

  • Burns from heated cups.
  • Fatigue.
  • Headaches.
  • Muscle soreness.
  • Skin  itching  

Some important points to note-

  • Surface should be cleaned.
  • Use of disposable and also use of sterile equipment for wet cupping.
  • Check for sensitive skin, presence of wounds and also for infections.
  • After the procedure, apply moisturizer or antiseptic cream.
