Introduction-

Meditation is a practice that has its origins in the Vedic time. The word Meditation originates from the Latin word Meditari,  which means to think. It helps connect oneself to one’s deep inner self. It has various techniques-

  • Contemplation
  • Concentration
  • use of various sounds
  • guided meditation
  • yoga
  • breathing

These techniques work at various levels. They act upon our senses, mind, intellect, and also emotions. Some techniques are easy to learn while some may result in participants giving up the practice quickly.

The human body

The human body consists of three aspects:

  1. Physical
  2. Inner faculty
  3. Deep inner self

Physical body- outer aspect of our bodies.

Inner faculty- it is The working consciousness, which is constantly changing. It includes the following-

  • Mind
  • Intellect
  • Ego
  • Chitta: The storehouse of all memories
  • Deep inner Self: The non changing pure consciousness, which witnesses the activity of the inner faculty.

How can we meditate?

There are various techniques for meditation. The first step is to concentrate. Now, with the eyes closed, or open, establish a point of focus. Some techniques used are-

  • Use of imagery or sound
  • Gazing
  • Breathing
  • Physical sensations

Positions for meditation-

You can use any posture you feel comfortable. You can meditate in sitting, walking, standing, and reclining positions.

Effectiveness-

  • Increases positive energy
  • Removes stress
  • Decreases anxiety and depression
  • Reduces pain
  • Increases blood flow
  • Decreases sympathetic overstimulation
  • slows down the aging process by altering telomerase activity.

Conclusion-

Meditation is an exercise of consciousness that results in the expansion of consciousness. It is an experience of unity,  it helps to reduces stress. It also brings brings increased creativity and efficiency to the functioning of the inner faculty.

During an acitivity of physical exercise, the mind does not tell the muscles to get stronger; rather, the muscles are strengthened automatically by the exercise process. Likewise, in meditation, the results are achieved automatically, not by any other mental manipulation. The process of meditation reaches the deepest level of the inner Self.
