NEW YORK, USA: Brown fat is a specialized type of body fat that burns energy to produce heat. A large study has linked its presence to lower odds of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and anxiety.

The findings offer new insights into the relationship between metabolism and mental and physical health. However, researchers have not established that brown fat directly prevents these conditions.

What Makes Brown Fat Different?

Unlike white fat, which primarily stores energy, brown adipose tissue uses energy to generate heat. It contains numerous mitochondria and a protein called uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), which helps convert energy into heat.

Brown fat takes up glucose and fatty acids from the bloodstream to support this process. It is found mainly around the neck, collarbones, armpits and chest.

Although brown fat was once thought to disappear after infancy, research published in 2009 established that adults also retain metabolically active brown fat.

What Did the New Study Find?

Researchers analyzed medical records and imaging data from 101,243 patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. They identified detectable brown fat in 8,897 patients and used artificial intelligence to estimate brown fat activity in 8,709 patients.

The study, published in Nature on 14 October 2026, found associations between detectable brown fat and lower odds of several metabolic, cardiovascular and psychiatric conditions. (Gómez-Banoy et al., 2026)

Lower Odds of Diabetes

Patients with detectable brown fat had approximately 58% lower odds of type 2 diabetes in the adjusted analysis.

Brown fat’s ability to consume glucose makes its relationship with metabolic health an important area of research. However, the finding does not prove that brown fat prevents diabetes or reduces an individual’s future risk by 58%.

Associations With Heart Health

The study found approximately 47% lower odds of chronic ischemic heart disease among patients with detectable brown fat.

Researchers also reported associations with more favorable results for selected cardiovascular indicators, lipid measurements and inflammatory markers.

These findings suggest a relationship between brown fat and cardiovascular health, but they do not establish that brown fat directly protects the heart.

The Link With Depression and Anxiety

One of the study’s notable findings involved mental health. Patients with detectable brown fat had approximately 22% lower odds of anxiety disorders and 32% lower odds of depressive episodes.

The researchers suggested that a healthier metabolic profile could partly explain these associations. Metabolism, inflammation, sleep and cardiovascular health can interact with mental wellbeing, but the study did not establish a direct biological pathway linking brown fat to mood.

As reported by The Independent, independent experts emphasized that further research is needed to determine whether brown fat directly causes the observed health benefits.

Can Brown Fat Activity Be Increased?

Scientists are investigating ways to stimulate brown fat, but no established treatment uses brown-fat activation to prevent or treat depression, anxiety, diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Cold Exposure and Exercise

Cold exposure can activate brown fat as the body generates heat. Researchers are also investigating whether exercise-related signals influence brown fat and other metabolically active tissues.

However, activating brown fat through cold exposure has not been shown to deliver lasting protection against the conditions identified in the study. Extreme cold may also pose risks, particularly for people with cardiovascular conditions.

Regular physical activity remains valuable for cardiovascular fitness, glucose regulation, sleep and mental wellbeing, regardless of its effects on brown fat.

What About Losartan?

The researchers investigated losartan, a blood pressure medicine, and found that it increased brown-fat activity and energy expenditure in cell and animal models.

These results provide a basis for further research, but they do not establish that losartan produces the same effects in humans or prevents disease through brown-fat activation. It should only be taken when prescribed for an appropriate medical indication.

What Are the Study’s Limitations?

The study was observational and relied on existing medical records and imaging. It identified associations rather than proving cause and effect.

Participants came from a cancer center, so their health histories and treatments may differ from those of the general population. In addition, detecting brown fat is not the same as establishing how active it is in every individual.

Further research, including clinical studies in humans, is needed to determine whether deliberately increasing brown fat activity produces meaningful health benefits.

What the Findings Mean for Health

The findings highlight the importance of studying fat tissue as an active part of the body’s metabolic system. They also raise new questions about how metabolic health relates to mental wellbeing.

For now, the results do not justify extreme cold exposure, unproven supplements or medication changes to increase brown fat. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet, adequate sleep and appropriate medical care remain important for overall health.

Conclusion

Brown fat is a specialized tissue that burns energy to generate heat. A large study linked its presence to lower odds of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and anxiety.

Although these associations offer promising research directions, they do not prove that brown fat prevents disease. Further human studies are needed before brown-fat activation can be recommended as a treatment or preventive strategy.
