PRAYAGRAJ- The Maha Kumbh 2025 is set to witness one of its most significant events, the Maghi Purnima Snan. With millions of devotees expected to participate, the medical force has been placed on high alert to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees.

In light of recent incidents, the Uttar Pradesh government has significantly ramped up medical preparations. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed all medical personnel in Mahakumbh Nagar and surrounding areas to remain on duty, ensuring that emergency services are available at all times.

Strengthened Medical Preparedness

The Shahi Snan or “royal bath” is a key event during the Mahakumbh, where saints and Naga Sadhus take the first dip in the Triveni Sangam. This ritual is believed to purify sins, foster spiritual growth, and help attain moksha.

In 2025, two important Shahi snan dates will occur: February 12, on Maghi Purnima, and February 26, on Mahashivratri. On Maghi Purnima, devotees bathe in the Triveni Sangam during Brahma Muhurat, believing it cleanses past sins. Many also fast and offer water to the moon after evening puja.

The final Shahi snan on February 26, Mahashivratri, marks the end of the Mahakumbh. Devotees of Lord Shiva meditate, chant, and stay awake through the night. A dip in the holy waters is believed to purify their souls and honor Lord Shiva.

These Shahi snans are significant spiritual events, drawing thousands of devotees seeking purification and divine blessings. To address the massive influx of devotees, over 1,200 medical personnel have been deployed across Mahakumbh Nagar. A backup plan has also been established to tackle any unforeseen medical emergencies.

Following the tragic January 29 stampede at Sangam, which resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, authorities have reinforced medical services. Special focus has been placed on preventing overcrowding and ensuring prompt medical response.

Comprehensive Hospital Readiness and Emergency Response

A four-member medical team has been tasked with inspecting all hospitals within the fairground to ensure an adequate supply of medicines and fully functional medical equipment. Additionally, major hospitals in Prayagraj, such as Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital and Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, have been placed on high alert.

Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital: 500 staff members on standby, 150 beds reserved for emergencies.

Advanced Facilities: 60 resident doctors on 24-hour alert, 30 CT scan machines, MRI, ultrasound services, and a 200-unit blood bank.

Ambulance Services: Over 50 ambulances are stationed for rapid medical transportation, supported by SDRF, NDRF, and police teams.

Special Measures for Devotee Safety

To enhance medical accessibility, sector hospitals within the fairground are undergoing routine inspections. A dedicated team led by Nodal Medical Officer Umakant Sanyal and senior healthcare professionals is overseeing operations.

Medical teams have been stationed strategically for at least 3-4 days to ensure round-the-clock assistance. Additionally, accommodations and food arrangements have been made for doctors and medical personnel to keep them available for emergencies.

Government’s Commitment to Health and Safety

The Uttar Pradesh government has emphasized that the well-being of devotees remains its highest priority. Healthcare infrastructure at the Maha Kumbh includes:

A state-of-the-art 100-bed central hospital

Two 25-bed sub-central hospitals

Eight 20-bed sector hospitals

Two 20-bed infectious disease hospitals

Ten first-aid posts across key locations

According to Dr. Santosh Singh, PRO of Motilal Nehru Medical College, all necessary medical facilities are in place, ensuring devotees receive prompt and effective treatment.

Managing the Growing Crowds

With Maha Kumbh already drawing over 33 crore visitors since its commencement on January 13, maintaining crowd safety remains a significant challenge. Authorities are implementing strict crowd-control measures and coordinating with emergency response teams to mitigate risks.

The religious gathering will continue until February 26, with upcoming special snans on February 12 (Maghi Purnima) and February 26 (Mahashivratri). The medical force remains committed to handling any situation, ensuring that this spiritual event proceeds smoothly and safely.
