Persistent neck shoulder pain? Read about trapezitis-

Introduction-

Trapezitis is a condition referring to pain, stiffness, and tightness of the upper trapezius, resulting in acute or persistent neck-shoulder pain.
It is a symptom of an existing underlying condition.  Trapezius muscle consists of 3 parts- superior, middle, inferior.

Aetiology

  • Monotonous jobs with highly repetitive work
  • forceful exertions
  • high level of static contractions
  • prolonged static loads
  • constrained work postures

Epidemiology

trapezitis concerns 20% of the adult population with severe chronic pain in the neck and shoulder region.the prevalence is much higher among women.

Characteristics/Clinical Presentation

  • Sudden onset of pain
  • Muscle stiffness
  • spasm
  • Tightness of the neck muscles
  • occipital headache
  • Tenderness
  • Presence of trigger points
  • Associated pain may arise in shoulder
  • Restricted range at neck
  • Weakness of cervical muscles
  • anxiety

clinical assessment tools-

  1. Cervical and shoulder range of movement
  2. Muscle strength
  3. Palpation
  4. Neurological examination
  5. palpation

Physical Therapy and its role-

Exercise Therapy

Physical activity and exercise have been proven to give a long-term pain relief,

High-intensity strength training should be performed. Continuing strength training helps prevent reccurence

  1. neck range of motion
  2. Upright row
  3. Reverse flies
  4. Lateral raise
  5. T exercise
  6. Y exercise
  7. I exercise
  8. Stretching exercise
  9. Core strengthening

Clinical Bottom Line

Trapezitis is rather a symptom of an underlying problem. it is often categorised with neck and shoulder disorders. The typical symptom of a patient with trapezitis is pain which is often associated with spasms, stiffness, and tenderness in the neck region. Trigger points can also be present and can cause headaches.

Physiotherapy  and exercise therapy are highly recommended including healthy lifestyle advice.
