The Indian government has screened over 146 million women for breast cancer, identifying 57,184 cases, with 50,612 individuals currently receiving treatment. These efforts are part of a nationwide initiative to enhance early detection and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The screening is conducted under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD), which aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and ensure comprehensive disease management.

Expanding Breast Cancer Screening and Treatment

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in India. Recognizing the need for early detection, the government launched the National NCD Portal in 2018 to streamline screening, diagnosis, and treatment. This initiative ensures the continuum of care for five major NCDs, including breast and cervical cancer.

As per data from the National NCD Portal, over 146 million women have been screened nationwide for breast cancer, resulting in 57,184 diagnoses. Of these, 50,612 women are currently undergoing treatment, highlighting the effectiveness of the early detection program.

In addition, more than 90 million women have been screened for cervical cancer, leading to 96,747 diagnoses, with 86,196 patients receiving treatment. These figures demonstrate the success of large-scale health screenings in identifying and managing cancer cases at an early stage.

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure for NCDs

To combat NCDs, the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) was launched in 2010 by the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The program focuses on improving healthcare facilities and enhancing human resource capabilities to address common NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, oral cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.

Key infrastructure developments under this initiative include:

  • 770 District NCD Clinics
  • 233 Cardiac Care Units (CCUs)
  • 372 District Day Care Centers
  • 6,410 NCD Clinics at the Community Health Center (CHC) level

These facilities have been instrumental in providing accessible and timely healthcare services to individuals at risk.

NCD Care in Odisha: A Regional Perspective

In the state of Odisha, significant investments have been made to support the NP-NCD initiative. The state now has:

  • 30 District NCD Clinics
  • 12 Cardiac Care Units (CCUs)
  • 32 District Day Care Centers
  • 414 NCD Clinics at Community Health Centers

These centers play a vital role in facilitating early detection, treatment, and long-term management of NCDs, reducing the overall burden on tertiary healthcare institutions.

Government Support and Implementation Strategies

The Department of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with state governments, provides both technical and financial assistance to improve NCD screening and treatment facilities. Under the National Health Mission (NHM), special focus is placed on:

  • Early diagnosis and treatment through comprehensive screening programs.
  • Referral systems for timely intervention at higher healthcare facilities.
  • Awareness campaigns to promote healthy lifestyle choices and preventive measures.
  • Human resource training to ensure healthcare professionals are well-equipped to manage NCD cases effectively.

Role of ASHA Workers in Community-Based Screening

Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA workers) play a crucial role in conducting Community-Based Assessment Checklists (CBAC) for individuals aged 30 years and above. This helps identify high-risk individuals who require further screening for NCDs. By integrating NCD screening into Comprehensive Primary Healthcare (CPHC), the government ensures that more people receive timely medical attention.

Conclusion

India’s large-scale breast cancer screening initiative marks a significant step in reducing mortality through early detection and timely treatment. The government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, training healthcare professionals, and promoting awareness campaigns ensures that more lives can be saved. The expansion of NCD clinics, cardiac care units, and district-level healthcare centers further supports this mission, making preventive healthcare accessible across the country.
